You’ve decided to do a complete career change, start a new hobby, or pursue a rising passion. Now what? Figuring out where to start and how to achieve these goals in the long run, can be an overwhelming process.

No matter how good you are at what you do or how lofty your goals, obstacles such as pressure, stress, and so many other factors are inevitable and difficult to overcome. Despite the challenges, successful people find a way to prevail.

What keeps them going? They know their "big why.” Why they got into the business and why they are working. Sometimes they are even surprised to discover that it is rarely for the money. Do you know your "big why?” If not, the time to figure it out is now and before the first big challenge comes your way. In determining your "big why”, ask yourself these questions:

  1. Why do you get out of bed in the morning?
  2. What is the #1 reason for your goal?
  3. What pushes you forward in your lows?
  4. If you were laying on your deathbed looking back, what would say brought you the greatest joy?
  5. How do you want to be remembered by others?

Because these are not lightly-asked questions, it’s important to critically reflect on the answers to better understand who you are.

Each person’s " big why” is as unique as themselves. For some, it is their family -- to provide them security, or to be able to spend more time with them. For others, it is their legacy -- to make a mark on this world and be remembered as someone who touched the lives of thousands in a positive way. For most, their career is a means to an end. Working in a business you're passionate about gives them the ability to do something that means a great deal to them.

Whatever you determine is your "big why” it should be the motivation, inspiration and tenacity you’ll need to persevere in times of hardship and come out even stronger than before.
